Green the Eastside

This spring and summer, we’re working to make the Eastside greener, cooler, and more flood resilient! With the Green the Eastside initiative, we will be adding more plants to the neighborhood. We want to hear from community members about what kinds of plants are most needed in the neighborhood and where they should go. Possible types of plants include:
Flood plants, such as rain gardens, that retain and absorb water to reduce flooding, stormwater runoff, and the spread of pollutants.
Shade plants, such as trees and other shrubs, to add shade and cool the temperature in the summer.
Food gardens to provide a source of low-cost, healthy food.
Historically significant plants, such as Indigo.
We also want to have a conversation about how plants can provide education for children, job opportunities for adults, and generally how public spaces in the neighborhood can be improved.

Sign up to take Clemson University’s Master Rain Gardener course to become professionally certified to install rain gardens. Rain gardens help reduce a property’s flood risk, as well as how much it contributes to neighborhood flooding.
Listening Session Schedule

Listening Session 1
When: Saturday, May 10, 2 - 4pm
Where: Ebenezer AME Church Fellowship Hall, 44 Nassau Street, 29403
What: This session will include a brainstorm for how plants can provide activities and learning opportunities for children. RVSP Here.
Listening Session 2
When: Saturday, May 17, 10am - 12pm.
Where: ECDC Office, 60 America Street, 29403
What: This will be a general session to discuss what kinds of plants are needed in Eastside and where they should go. RSVP Here.
